The Good Stuff: Protecting Blank Space, Honoring Your Commitments and Rest

Jessica Modad | JAN 27, 2023

I did a thing!

You would have thought it was revolutionary.

It raised eyebrows, resulting in head shakes, frustration and disappointment for others.

Way back in December of 2022, I vowed not to leave the house for 3 days.

I made plans.

Plans to do what filled my cup, made me smile, connect meaningfully to loved ones and rest. Some of those days included no plans at all.

I told the people closest to me when my holiday sabbatical would begin. Then, I never thought about it again

… until the first unsolicited request came in.

I politely declined and restated that I would not be leaving the house.

A few days later another request… then another. Then an innocent offer to solve the problem, ”we could meet somewhere closer to you."

My answer, "that sounds lovely, how about my living room?"

….crickets.

Why is this cautionary tale important?

Because, whether committing to work or wellness, boundaries and planning are essential. Well meaning humans will problem solve on your behalf in order to meet their needs.

Know what you want and protect your intentions!

Quote

"As important as it is to have a plan for doing work, it is perhaps more important to have a plan for rest, relaxation, self-care, and sleep." - Akiroq Brost

Question

What are you committed to doing?

With the energy of new years, new moons, and new beginnings propelling us to lean even further into the person we long to be, I ask... what small action are you committed to upholding?

Thanks for reading to the bottom of our first issue of The Good Stuff.

I'm excited to continue pondering, practicing and playing with you this year.

Until next time!

Jessica
